Dr hab. inż. Tomasz Bergier is a Professor at AGH University of Krakow, affiliated with the Department of Environmental Management and Protection at the Faculty of Geo-Data Science, Geodesy, and Environmental Engineering. His research interests include blue-green infrastructure (BGI) and its applications in water management, particularly flood risk management, stormwater management, and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
He is actively involved in promoting knowledge of climate change adaptation and mitigation, both through formal academic education and through courses and training programmes for professionals, particularly local government employees, as well as representatives of non-governmental organisations, local leaders and activists. He is a researcher, designer and advocate of constructed wetlands. As part of his doctoral research, he investigated the potential use of constructed wetlands for treating landfill leachate, while his habilitation research focused on their application in treating wastewater contaminated with petroleum-derived substances.
He is an expert and member of numerous bodies and organisations, including the Water and Wastewater Management Council advising the Mayor of Kraków, the Water Management Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Environment and Climate Change Adaptation Team established by the Ministry of Investment and Economic Development and the Ministry of the Environment. He is the author of more than 100 scientific publications and expert reports and has led numerous research projects, including international initiatives such as “CWetlandsData: Towards the Constructed Wetlands Knowledge Platform for Sustainable Development” (ERANet-LAC 3rd Multi-Thematic Joint Call 2017/2018).
He initiated, serves as a subject-matter expert for, and heads the MAK: Inter-University Climate Academy postgraduate programme. He is also Vice-Dean for Research and International Cooperation at the Faculty of Geo-Data Science, Geodesy, and Environmental Engineering at AGH University of Krakow, the AGH Rector’s Coordinator for Cooperation with the Nordic Countries, and the AGH Rector’s Coordinator for Cooperation with the Baltic University Programme (BUP).
